Autopsy of superflow collapses and multiple phase slips

چکیده

Although phase slippage across an orifice in its purest form takes place by individual phase increments by 2n, there are many instances of flow in which the energy dissipation occurs by lumps involving much larger phase difference changes. Such events, the observation of which has been reported first by Sabo and Zimmermann, reduce the flow through the micro-aperture of two-hole resonators to residual values which can be close to zero. We have studied experimentally their detailed features and report the existence of two rather distinct manifestations of superflow collapses as well as the strong effect of hydrostatic pressure on their occurrence. Possible mechanisms are reviewed to explain a phenomenon that involves many vortex lines which evolve in time in such a way as to change the phase difference across the micro-aperture by 2nrt.

Phase-slip memory effects in dissipation-free superflow

Critical superflow, preceding a free ringing superfluid oscillation, induces a remnant stochastic uncertainty in the oscillation amplitude. We demonstrate that the distribution function for the oscillation’s velocity amplitude reflects both the quantized size of the underlying phase-slip dissipation events, as well as the stochastic nature of the processes which nucleate the slips @S0163-1829~9...

Phase-Slip Avalanches in the Superflow of 4He through Arrays of Nanosize Apertures

In response to recent experiments by the Berkeley group, we construct a model of superflow through an array of nanosize apertures that incorporates two basic ingredients: (1) disorder associated with each aperture having its own random critical velocity, and (2) effective interaperture coupling, mediated through the bulk superfluid. As the disorder becomes weak there is a transition from a regi...

One-dimensional transport of bosons between weakly linked reservoirs.

We study a flow of ultracold bosonic atoms through a one-dimensional channel that connects two macroscopic three-dimensional reservoirs of Bose-condensed atoms via weak links implemented as potential barriers between each of the reservoirs and the channel. We consider reservoirs at equal chemical potentials so that a superflow of the quasicondensate through the channel is driven purely by a pha...

Universal damping behavior of dipole oscillations of one-dimensional ultracold gases induced by quantum phase slips.

We study superflow decay via quantum phase slips in trapped one-dimensional (1D) quantum gases through dipole oscillations induced by sudden displacement of the trapping potential. We find the relation between the damping rate of the dipole oscillation G and the phase-slip nucleation rate Γ as G∝Γ/v, where v is the flow velocity. This relation allows us to show that damping of 1D Bose gases in ...

Fixing of Cycle Slips in Dual-Frequency GPS Phase Observables using Discrete Wavelet Transforms

The occurrence of cycle slips is a major limiting factor for achievement of sub-decimeter accuracy in positioning with GPS (Global Positioning System). In the past, several authors introduced a method based on different combinations of GPS data together with Kalman filter to solve the problem of the cycle slips. In this paper the same philosophy is used but with discrete wavelet transforms. For...
